" Droit de cité "

Indigenous, autochthonic, savage / cultivated, migratory, colonizing, exotic, naturalized: this terminology can be applied not only to humans, but also to vegetation. The botanic artist Liliana Motta points out these similarities in the vocabulary, thus revealing our “racist” relation to plants. She takes it upon herself to defend the so-called “invasive” species, “illegal” plants, and “pest plants” (scientific terms) by collecting a multitude of “weeds,” including a great variety of Hypericum (Saint John’s wort) planted in the FRAC‘s garden.

Liliana Motta: Artist-botanist of Argentinian origin, interested in “weeds.” By foregrounding their subjective, ideological classification, she questions the concepts of national territory and protectionism. She has created a collection of Polygonum, registered as a “National collection” by the Conservatoire français des collections spécialisées.
