Robert J. Flaherty’s silent film Nanook of the North (1922) is pure poetry. It is an incredibly powerful documentary, presenting a family’s daily struggle for survival in the Great White North in the 1920s. By its sheer existence and its evocative power, the film seems to bring imagination into being. For Guigou Chenevier: «Onemustfindmusicalor Guigou Chenevier: One must find musical One must find musical One must find musical
respiration in tune with the suspended time, with the slowness, and with the perpetual struggle against the elements, and put oneself in danger at every instant, just as Nanook on the edge of an ice shelf.»
