Recurrent forms, figures in 5/4 time, trance music, polyphonies, and polyrhythms are among the elements borrowed from traditional African music which has inspired Western “art” music since the 1960s. The string quartet Béla interweaves traditions in a musical encounter with Moriba Koïta, a renowned Mali griot.
They will perform White Man Sleeps (1982), a work by the South-African composer Kevin Volans who, during the apartheid regime, sought to reconcile African and European esthetic. Let this lively, stimulating, and intoxicating musical blend carry you away…
