The question of sexuality in a colonial situation has been largely ignored by contemporary historiographers. It is treated here from the point of view Algeria, with regard to its most problematic aspects: sex integration and prostitution; virility and “homosexuality”; and wartime sexual violence. Christine Taraud is Professor of Contemporary History of Maghreb at the New York University in France where she heads the project “Gender and colonization”, and member of the Centre des recherches en histoires du XIXe siècle (Paris-I and Paris-IV). She works in particular on women’s issues, gender, and sexuality in the context of colonial Maghreb.
