With a French multiethnic background, the film director Keira Maameri grew up on hip hop culture. Her work reveals the way in which conformity and opposition become formalized in this artistic expression of “discomfort.”
In her documentary, Don’t panic (the title has been borrowed from a French rapper, Medine: “I’m Muslim, don’t panik”), Keira Maameri tries to understand how and why a Muslim artist brings together art and religion. She gives the floor to five rappers of different nationalities and lets them express themselves positively and constructively, quite against the grain of usual stereotypes. She thus underscores a certain lifestyle, an ethics and an identity claim based on values promoted by Islam.
A Q&A session will follow the screening.
