« Aguirre, la colère de Dieu » de Werner Herzog, 1972

The “becoming of power” forms the contours of the German film maker Werner Herzog’s work: a corpus teeming with kings, conquerors of the worthless. In Herzog’s films power is fatal and vain; it disintegrates. This is the origin of his obsession with understanding why great civilizations ended in chaos… The phantom of war is always present, as in the film Lessons of Darkness which constitutes the starting point of this conference. It opens with film extracts, dating from the 1970s to the present, and a viewing guide is offered to help grasp this brilliant oeuvre.
