An exhibition on two sites: the Historial de la Grande Guerre in Péronne and the Espace culturel François Mitterrand in Beauvais
The Historial de la Grande Guerre in Péronne and the Espace culturel François Mitterrand in Beauvais, both located in a region deeply marked by war, are pleased to present ‘Phantoms and Nightmares’, an exhibition of contemporary art in dialogue with the Historial’s First World War collections. Juxtaposed with objects from the Great War, contemporary photographs, installations and videos evoke the ideas of ghosts, dreams and agonies as resurgences of the traumas of war.
Organised in two parts – in Péronne and Beauvais – the exhibition explores two particular aspects of phantoms and nightmares. The Historial addresses the situation of the individual in face of history and the heritage of the war: personal memory, collective memory, symbols, traces and violence. Beauvais, meanwhile, takes visitors on a journey through childhood fears from a more psychoanalytical perspective: secrets, filiations, anxieties, primal fears and madness. Within each of the exhibition spaces, phantoms make their appearance as well, like possible messages from the hereafter.
Presented side by side, the contemporary artworks and the Historial’s objects and documents generate correspondences and contrasts which shed new light on the exhibition theme.
