Pour les féministes et théoricien.ne.s du genre, la traduction est une manipulation, consciente ou inconsciente, au service de l’idéologie dominante de notre culture. Alors dé.normez-vous avec nous !
La traduction n’est pas une activité neutre, et les choix conscients ou inconscients opérés par traductrices et traducteurs ont toujours pour effet de modifier le texte original. Il faut alors se demander ce qui, du choix d’un texte à sa traduction, influence ce texte original et sa réception dans la culture cible.
Parce que les études féministes et les études de genre repensent les rapports de pouvoir existant au sein de la société patriarcale, la traduction, activité souvent transparente aux yeux du public, est en réalité un terrain tout à fait propice à l’analyse des rapports de force à l’œuvre dans ce travail.
A l’aide de plusieurs exemples principalement tirés de traductions entre l’anglais et le français, cette intervention se propose donc de faire un petit tour d’horizon de la question du genre en traduction et d’y montrer l’importance de cet acte éminemment politique. Ce panorama abordera, entre autres, les points suivants : l’historique et le contexte dans lesquels s’opèrent le choix des textes à traduire et les choix de traduction ; la question du genre grammatical en anglais et en français ; la traduction comme métaphore du rapport de force entre les genres ; ainsi que les tentatives de renversement de ce rapport de force.
